Funeral for teenager killed in border protest

(4 Oct 2018) LEADIN: Hundreds of mourners have paid their respects to a teenager killed at a protest on the Israeli-Gaza border on Wednesday. Ahmed Abu Habel was reportedly hit on the head by a gas canister fired by an Israeli soldier. STORYLINE: Heartbroken cries and shouts fill the air. Ahmed Abu Habel - the fifteen year-old killed on Wednesday - is surrounded by his family. The teenager died during a protest at the entrance to the Erez border crossing, which connects Israel and Gaza. Gaza's Ministry of Health has said Ahmed died from a head injury. An AP cameraman who witnessed the incident said the boy was hit by a tear gas canister, reportedly fired by Israeli troops. Ahmed's uncle, like the rest of his family, is visibly upset. "What did Ahmed do to the soldier? What did he do to Israel? Why did they shoot him? What did he do to the Jews?," asks Ramdan Abu Habel. "This is a child. Why does he not live his life like the rest of the world's children. Why do they kill him?" There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. Thousands protested on Wednesday near the border as part of the months-long campaign organised by Gaza's Hamas rulers. They are demanding an end to the more than decade-long Israeli-Egyptian blockade. The militant group, which has controlled Gaza since 2007, has intensified protests recently as ceasefire efforts falter. 145 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the demonstrations, including 31 children.
