Liz recites a very special poem written and drawn around 1880. Hope you enjoy! Written by Cora Gaines Carrell.

The Turkey's Farewell
Great is my country, and a martyr, I, upon its sacrificial altar am to die!
I, monarch of the whole domestic flock, must lay my royal head upon the block;
Must yield my life, expressing thus the thanks for what the months have given mortal cranks.
My legs, that sturdily o'er field and grove have through long summer days been wont to rove,
Will soon by molars of some soulless boy as crisp brown drumsticks...furnish greedy joy
Or, mayhap, of this strongly feathered tip, of a plebian brush'll be made, which in the grip
Of vigorous, heartless hands, shall brush the hearth of ashes clean and clearly prove my worth.
Unmourned, uncared for, my poor severed head shall mutely witness that I'm dead.
This breast'll be thrust with carving fork and knife, this heart, now instinct, full of life,
Be but a gravied giblet, and within this body...stuffing! Where a soul has been.
Farewell, false friends, farewell!
...I trust you may, far more than I,
 enjoy Thanksgiving Day!
