The following audio recording is the original broadcast of ‘American Splendor Radio Special’ as herd on KCRW-FM in Santa Monica, CA in 1991. Being a huge fan of the comic, I planned record the show. Unfortunately, my stereo was on the fritz and was being repaired at the time of the broadcast, so I had to record it on an old portable boom box, hence the questionable audio quality.

During the time of the broadcast, there was a live stage production of the title in L. A. and I had seen the show while we were both at the 1991 San Diego Comic Con.

This program was only aired once and it took Harvey’s untimely death in 2010 for the station to replay it. I was happy to record the show again with much clearer sound but my eagerness was tainted when they censored and edited out a couple of rough words during the ‘Rip-Off Chick’ story. Ironically, just before the original broadcast, the show’s writer and director, Vince Waldron, made an on-the-air warning of this language and said if you would be turned off by it, you should turn to another station for the next 30 minutes.

….and, in turn, I should give a similar warning with this unauthorized “broadcast”.

I have seen bits and pieces of this show on YT and petrographix has done a great job playing pieces of this with well-placed frames from the comic pages but I haven’t seen this posted in its entirety. So I decided to push my copyrighted luck and slap it all up here.

I hope you enjoy this show and a big thanks to Harvey, his wife Joyce and his co-workers for making life more splendid.
