Peru leader calls referndum on four anti-corruption proposals

(9 Oct 2018) Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra called a referendum on Tuesday for December 9, where the population will vote on four proposals to modify the judicial and political systems affected by corruption. In a ceremony at the presidential house, Vizcarra said he agreed with the questions that will be put to the public in the referendum regarding the reform of the National Justice Board, in charge of choosing judges and prosecutors. He also agreed with the regulation of the financing of political organisations, as well as with the amendment that prohibits the immediate re-election of parliamentarians. However, the president said he disagreed with the question about reforming the constitution to divide Congress into two chambers with an upper and a lower house. Congress voted in mid-September to approve the anti-corruption referendum seeking to modify the constitution and clean up corruption in the political and judicial system. Vizcarra aims to clean up politics following the leak of several videos showing judges negotiating bribes with politicians to settle cases. He took over as president in March after Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned amid a vote-buying scandal.
