In this talk Rahma takes us on a journey through her life. Which turns out to be much more about similarities than about differences.
By telling her story Rahma aims to change the way society thinks about and deals with disabilities.
As we become more aware of the ups and downs of a life with Down syndrome we can change our unconscious biases and learn to embrace the beauty of our differences.
Rahma can’t wake up one day with a different number of chromosomes. But she has never let the extra chromosome define her. So why do we as a society still continue to define people by their conditions?
Rahma Khaled is a 22 year old Egyptian Special Olympics champion with over 150 medals locally and internationally. She was born with Down syndrome. With her hard work, persistence and assistance of her mother, Amal Otayfa, a speech therapist, she was able to improve her mental and speech skills. She became the first TV anchor with Down syndrome in Egypt. With all her accomplishments, Rahma was voted the most influential woman in 2015, the youngest to receive the title among Egyptian women. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
