The German governments plans are still very ambitious,by the year 2020,it wants renewable sources to cover 30 percent of the country's electricity needs. The current proportion is 15 percent. The greater part of the alternative energy used comes from wind power. But the construction of windmills has stagnated. Long-standing plans to build windmills off the coasts have been delayed. And the modernization of existing windmills is not proceeding quickly enough. But both non-governmental alternative energy associations and Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel are still optimistic about achieving the 30 percent goal. Critics disagree - the Economy Minister of Schleswig-Holstein,for example. He is calling for a mixture of energy sources in which nuclear power and coal-firing plants would play crucial roles.
