(28 Nov 2018) Alenka Ermenc on Wednesday formally took up her post as the chief of the general staff of the Slovenian armed forces. The 55-year-old major general is the first female officer to lead her country's forces, and the only woman to currently hold the top armed forces post among the NATO countries. British-educated Ermenc replaces Major General Alan Geder after serving as his deputy. Geder took over Slovenia's military earlier this year after his predecessor was sacked over poor results in a NATO test. Ermenc, who was promoted to the rank of major general last week, participated in the NATO-led KFOR peacekeeping mission in Kosovo and holds several army awards. Slovenia, an Alpine nation of some two million people, has about 7,500 soldiers, including both active and reserve troops.
