We were a little closer than before this time so I thought this part looked a bit better than the others! The orcas actively involved in the attack are mostly females, juveniles, and a young calf. Their strategy is to harass the mother, tire out the pair, and ultimately separate the two. Mother gray whales alone are more than a match for killer whales with their size and power and can fight back by supporting the calf above the surface as much as possible and swatting at the killer whales with her tail flukes.
