This is a dramatic reading of "Argand Plane Crash", a blog by the Stand-Up Physicist available at Science20.com. Real numbers are algebraically distinct from imaginary numbers. The visuals should also be distinct. That is not the case for the Argand plane. Animations make the reversal of a scalar look different from flipping the sign of the imaginary. The former requires memory while the later requires mirrors.
