Labor Day weather on the Gulf Coast won’t be much different from today’s weather but after Monday, we prepare for the threat of a tropical depression or tropical storm. Potential Tropical Storm #7 is in the southern Bahamas, on a west-northwest path. That will take it through the Florida Keys and into the southeastern Gulf tomorrow. By that point, it will likely increase wind speed to become a tropical depression, and then a tropical storm. The next name on the list for Tropical Storms is Gordon. This system will take a northwest track toward southeastern Louisiana but will have impact all along the northern Gulf Coast. A Storm Surge Watch covers coastal Mississippi. A Tropical Storm Watch covers coastal Mississippi and coastal Alabama. Expect dangerous surf and deadly rip currents by Tuesday. Rain totals by Wednesday could range from 3 to 6 inches along the coast from Mobile Bay, westward. North of I-10, rain is more likely to be several inches. The closer the system gets to our coast, the heavier the rain, and higher the storm surge could be. Tropical Storm Florence in the western Atlantic may get a little stronger but it will stay in the open waters of the central Atlantic. It’s no threat to any land.
