(10 Dec 2018) China is upping the pressure on the United States and Canada as bail hearings for a top Chinese technology executive resume in Vancouver. A Communist Party newspaper called Canada's treatment of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou "inhumane." The U.S. wants her extradited, alleging that Huawei used a Hong Kong shell company to evade U.S. trade curbs on Iran. The arrest could fuel U.S.-China trade tensions at a time when the two sides are seeking to resolve a dispute over Beijing's technology and industrial strategy. Both sides have sought to keep the issues separate, at least so far. Philip Levy (LEE-vee), a trade adviser to the George W. Bush administration and now an adjunct professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management says the arrest was an unusual step in that it got personalized. But, Levy says, "The United States has had long standing concerns about Huawei. They're concerned that it's far too close to the Chinese government, to the Chinese Communist Party, and that it might take some actions if it gets involved in the U.S. communications backbone which compromises the national security of the United States. Levy says the dispute reflects the fact that he believes the US and China are "in a trade war right now." The question now, says Levy, "is whether the Chinese will keep their cool about this."
