West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra, who headed key committees on the goods and services tax or GST, says the national tax has not performed up to expectations. On the first anniversary of the GST, Mr Mitra said the centre did not do a pilot project to test out the taxation architecture. The centre only played optics by pushing the GST through in July last year as a "tryst with destiny". On the first anniversary of the "one, tax for one nation" idea, Dr Mitra says there will be a political price to pay in 2019.
