This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. During his military high school senior year in Brazil, Renato Dornelas had a dream of crossing the borders and traveling abroad. After graduation, he had a chance of traveling to the US through a nation-wise competition for highly motivated students. That opportunity changed his life in ways he would have never expected. One year later, he had visited 4 different continents, moved to Austria, and started a photo-statement project to motivate people to share their own dreams. … young activist in international waters. With only 18 years, Renato founded Latin America’s first youth-led initiative which brought together over 30000 Brazilian young activists for a conference to further engage youth activism connected to gender inequality. His work led to the development of national Afro-Brazilian awareness campaigns and the replication of youth leadership trainings all over Brazil and abroad. In 2011, he was invited by former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, to the Diplomatic Room in Washington D.C., where he gave his first first internationally relevant speech on Brazilian youth participation. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
