French govt spokesman on Ukraine, fuel protests

(26 Nov 2018) French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said on Monday that "nothing seems to justify the use of force" by Russia after tensions with Ukraine escalated in the Kerch Strait. Griveaux described the situation on the Crimean peninsula as "serious" and a "direct consequence" of the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. He added President Emmanuel Macron had not spoken to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, but the countries' foreign ministers were due to meet on Tuesday. Russian border guards opened fire on three Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait near the Russia-occupied Crimean peninsula on Sunday. Griveaux also spoke at a news briefing in Paris about ongoing protests across France and expressed concern about the "violent" scenes on the Champs-Elysees broadcast around the world. The spokesman said the solution to the unrest, which began over fuel tax rises and has morphed into a wider criticism of Macron's presidency, would be found through "gathering everybody around the table".
