After 60 years of empty promises, funding shortages, and opposition from environmentalists who for the most part didn't even live in the town, the new St. Croix Crossing (no longer called the Stillwater Bridge because it's actually in Oak Park Heights) is finally becoming a reality. The location was chosen to minimize impacts to the river- getting the freeway over in one location as opposed to plowing it through bluffs and parklands and historic buildings near downtown Stillwater. When it's done motorists who have no business in downtown Stillwater will no longer have to put up with the daily congestion, and those that do have business will no longer have to put up with the traffic from those that don't.
