Some 20 women in Halabja have opened a new venue to sell their products one day in a week directly to their customers, in an apparent competition against the male-dominated market. Working for women in Halabja’s public places has increased but remain very limited as of now. These women make decoration material as they recycle used objects, to be sold in Halabja’s weekly market. "I visited many shops wanting to purchase the things, but the amount they were willing to pay was not what I wanted," Shoxan Jamal,of the women said. "They wanted to buy them for less and sell them for a lot more . Hence, it is better to sell them directly for less to people." Halabja Women Group opened the weekly market so the women of the city can sell their products there. The place is used by the sellers for free, conditioned that they keep the prices lower than the market. Shilan Sdiq, who co-organized the weekly market, said that the women can have the flexibility to make the products, and find market for them by themselves. "It is better to have one day in a week than having it every daym," Sdiq said, "People will be excited to turn to the market. We have handmade products. Sellers can have time to make things again and come here to sell them. Sellers in this market have to be women. Men can only be buyers here.
