In rural areas across the South, land that has been in African American families for generations is often untitled, leaving family’s vulnerable to impending developers. The family may wish to hold on to their land to help preserve the rural landscape and their family history, but economic pressures make it difficult. That’s where Jennie Stephens comes to the rescue. By introducing a sustainable forestry program, she and the Center for Heirs Property has helped solve two problems with one big pile of wood. 

Jennie Stephens brings 24 years of nonprofit management experience to her work with the Center for Heirs Property, where she has served as executive director since its inception in 2005. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the College of Charleston, a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Charleston, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA.
