Rivers are deeply powerful, yet often overlooked in regard to their influence on our personal and communal lives. A veteran river guide looks at the ways in which contact with these waterways can change and shape us and our communities for the better. First and foremost, I am a teacher. It’s really the only thing I know how to do and is the current (metaphor intended) that runs through my life. I have worked as a boatman and river guide, teacher of seventh graders and college students, and director of a ski and snowboard school. I like to joke that I have a short attention span, so I have to keep busy, but really I just love learning. And I love sharing what I have learned with others. That’s what I consider teaching to be: sharing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
