My first little attempt at gettin' just a tiny bit more speed out of the Tamiya WT-01 Monster Truck chassis. A very affordable, quick and easy attempt and it worked.

This is my beloved and very well-used Tamiya Mighty Bull XB from 2006. I love running it, but as time has passed I could need a bit more top speed. I could have gone brushless, but I as I didn't need a speed demon, but a fun splashproof Tamiya WT-01 old-school MT basher, I simply got a new pinion for it and used a brushed electronics set from a previous Traxxas Stampede 2WD model I had lying around. 

My little Mighty Bull seems just as fast and sparky now as The Stampede, though of course it handles very different, especially with the short stock WT-01 friction shocks. Already got a 4WD conversion set ready for it, including some GPM Racing Wild Dagger Extended Shock Towers and a new set of oil filled dampers, but I think I will miss the extreme bouncyness of it. It sure adds some fun to it. So until then, I will enjoy running it around with this set-up ... and watching it bounce.

The Tamiya WT-01 Mighty Bull XB was born with a Tamiya 18T aluminium pinion gear and the following Tamiya electronics from 2006:

- Tamiya TEU-101BK ESC
- Tamiya TRU-01 27 Mhz Receiver
- Tamiya TSU-01 Servo
- Tamiya 27T Brushed Motor (Silver Can)

I replaced the Tamiya 18T aluminium pinion with a Carson 20T steel pinion gear. That should in itself add some top speed and add some durability ... for a very low cost. The WT-01 has a fixed pinion mesh with the options of only an 18T or a 20T, so no higher possible. I then added a waterproof electronics set-up from a brushed Traxxas Stampede 2WD:

- Traxxas XL-5 ESC
- Traxxas 2056 Servo
- Traxxas 12T Titan Brushed 550 Type Motor

... and a Sanwa RX-37W Waterproof (read: splashproof) 2.4 GHz Receiver and a 2S LiPo battery.

Mounting the Traxxas motor required some drilling, in order to fit the much longer Traxxas motor axle in the compact WT-01 chassis. It's not a critical spot on the WT-01 and can easily be covered up again, when the time comes to switch the motor again. Better drill a small hole in cheap plastic than shortening the motor axle. More critically the installation also required mounting the motor pinion directly on the round surface of the motor axle. Traxxas and Tamiya don't seem to like being mixed. I guess I could have filed it down a bit to create a flatter surface for the grub screw but ... incredibly, the pinion hasn't broken loose yet!

Funny thing. I've seen a lot of youtubers upgrading their WR-01's with a set of Traxxas 12T Titan motors but I have never seen them addressing this problem in their videos. I wonder why and what they did?

No ball bearings installed yet. Just wanna run it around in this cold and wet summer without too much maintenance. This is it for now. A simple and cheap operation to add a little more speed to the Tamiya Expert Built WT-01 model. Even with this added speed, quite a few roll overs and small jumps on tarmac the WT-01 has not broken a single part yet. Wonder if I should try it out brushless with the 20T Pinion? The WT-01 sure has proved durable but I don't think it was made for that kinda speed back in 1999 when the first WR-01 appeared.
