Went for a run in the Arroyo Seco in Los Angeles on January 20, 2014 on a day I took off work. There are two large storm drains that empty into the Arroyo that are easy to walk into without having to duck. I have a drain map from the City of Los Angeles that I'd reviewed, so I decided to see how far I could go inside one of them (the one without much water as though my running shoes are water-resistant, I didn't want to get my feet wet with questionable material and liquid). I also had only a very small flashlight with me, so I couldn't go very far. It was cold, dark, and creepy inside. People use the drains to party, and I'm sure there are homeless people that live inside them. I decided to explore another time when I had better lighting and sturdier shoes. There is a ton of broken glass and debris in the drain, so better safe than sorry. This drain leads way into Highland Park, but I got as far as under the 110 Parkway and slightly beyond, but again, there was little light. There are paintings of nautilus shells all inside the drain, as well as your standard urban graffiti. I'm planning on going back there again soon.
