Wiktoria Kawecka & Józef Redo from the Operetta Theatre „Nowośći”, Warsaw – Usta milczą, dusza śpiewa (Lips Are Silent, Violins Whisper) from „Merry Widow”( Lehar) Favorit Record c. 1910 (Polish) NOTE: Here’s one more of my contributions to the 100th Anniversary of regaining of the Polish Independence in 1918. This recording is a little older than that, however the names of Wiktoria Kawecka and Józef Redo – one of the best duets in Polish history of the Operetta – stay close with all the dates of the rebirthing Polish state in the early 20th century. Kawecka, indeed, was a phenomenon not only as perfect singer but also a talented actress and master in a stage whistle (!). She also belonged to the wealthiest singers in Europe of her times: the fortune she gathered during her enormously successful stage contracts in St. Petersburg in Russia during last two decades of the Tzarist Empire was fairly depleted by the events of the Bolshevik revolution – which she, however, luckily run away from. She died in Warsaw in 1929.
