Tamil nadu chief minister edappadi k palanisamy Narrated the sequence of events leading to the outbreak of violence on May 22, he said that the district administration held talks with the People’s Coordination which was spearheading the sterlite protest on May 20. The administration told the agitators that a march to the collectorate lead to  law and order problem and so, instead, they could assemble on a playground  and ventilate their grievances to mark their 100th day of protests.
However, the agitators rejected this plea and took out a march in defiance of the prohibitory order, leading to violence in the collectorate and en route.  Police resorted to lathi charge and eventually firing to contain the violence, he said.
Leader of the Opposition  M K Stalin rejected  as an eyewash the GO on closure of the plant as well as the judicial enquiry ordered into the firing. He said a GO based on a Cabinet decision alone would be immune from challenge on the ground that it was to give effect to a policy decision
