Ella Comerford-Barnett, Grade 6, Zero Waste Cafeteria Project, Indianapolis, IN (2018): Environment & Climate Change; Hunger An avid environmentalist, Ella decided to impact the food waste problem in her school by reducing food thrown out during lunch periods and redistributing “recovered” (unused) food to help the hungry through three food pantries in her community. Students at every grade level volunteered in the initiative and the school reduced its lunch waste by 75%.
