Isabel Marrucho tells us at TEDxAveiro about innovation in the past, present in future. She tells us about innovation in Portugal, comparing it with other EU countries, and what is missing, as well as about policy of innovation in Portugal. Through many practical examples, she explains that innovation is not just a natural process or happens with a help of some magic and miracle, but we have to educate to innovate. How? We need: creativity, technology know how and, our ability to work in interdisciplinary groups. Isabel Marrucho was born in Lisbon. She got her degree in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. The interest in Physical Chemistry, the subject that ties and justifies life, was due to Professor Jorge Calado classes. The 4 long years of PhD in a small cowboys town in the USA opened new horizons. The Friday nights spent with Blues divas and hot nachos revealed the jazz and the blues; the lack of the sea developed the taste for mountain hiking, which usually ended with the sun set at the Rockies; the fluffy and silent snow brought the ski. However, the melting port was not sufficiently attractive to begin a family and she came back to Portugal where she had 3 kids. The fortune brought her to the University of Aveiro, the most American campus in Portugal. There, she started a research group in Applied Termodynamics, with interests in the development of new products. Some of the research themes are fluorinated solvents, biodegradable polymers, biofuels, emulsions and encapsulation. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
