Guillermo Del Toro effectively uses the symbolism of hands in The Shape of Water to tell us things about each of it's main characters. Beginning with Strickland, played by Michael Shannon, we'll analyze how each character tells us about themselves through the use of their hands in Guillermo del Toro's New Movie The Shape of Water. The Shape of Water meaning of hands differs greatly for each character and doesn't tell us much more than we already know but it does an excellent job of subconsciously reinforcing important elements of each character.

In The Shape of Water Sally Hawkins' character literally uses her hands as her only means of communication. Michael Shannon's fingers literally rot off his (left) hand which is significant, and Elisa's neighbor Giles uses his hands as an illustrator which reinforces themes relating to his character and his alone.
