This game is actually part of a small series of ARPG originally known as XZR and it debuted on the MSX. Over the years, it would also see distribution on the Sega Genesis/MD and TurboGrafx-CD. It's one of the most badass games for this system, but I've definitely played better. As Sadler the desert warrior, you'll travel from town to town as you try to quell a rebellion and stop warring countries from basically killing each other, but there are numerous plot twists along the way and a man who wants to rule the land. The best part about this game isn't the graphics or the music (though the music is good) or gameplay, but the writing, IMO. 

This game has such laid-back characters and this game is a testament to censorship in old games, because there isn't much (if any). There's cursing, swearing, killing, blood, religious talk and just about every taboo you can think of from a game in the early nineties. It's the eight wonder of the video game world, as this game was probably never meant to be released in the U.S., but it came out. In fact, the U.S. even got both Exile games for the TGCD courtesy of Working Designs, although the second (Wicked Phenomenon) was altered in such a way that it's loathed by even some fans of the series.

Enough about that though. This game has an overhead view when you're in towns, but a side-scrolling view when you enter battle scenes. With the exception of the early portions of the game, you won't have to worry much about losing because the game is criminally unbalanced and you'll end up just swatting everyone to see what happens next. If this game was more rounded, it would be one of my top Genesis/MD games, but it still gets lots of brownie points for being one of the most interesting, story-wise. Enjoy.
