Built in 1482 by Portuguese traders, Elmina Castle was the first European slave-trading post in all of sub-saharan Africa. Located on the western coast of present-day Ghana, it was originally built to protect the gold trade but following its capture by the Dutch in 1637, it came to serve the Dutch slave trade with Brazil and the Caribbean. Our connection as black people to these dungeons in West Africa is equally important to Black people as the Holocaust of the Jewish people which is memorialized every year throughout the world. Never forgotten and never to happen again! We as Africans both at home and abroad must commemorate our ancestors and celebrate our return "home" to our" Mother" Africa.
