When the grid is down, you can store up food, water,  and maybe you have a wood stove or something else that doesn't require the electrical grid to run. One thing however is that toilets stop flushing after you use one tank full and taps of course don't run. While not a requirement to survive in an emergency, having running water, especially from a well is handy. My project for this is to use a bilge pump to pump the water using 12 volts and about 3 amps to give us a bit of running water in an emergency, grid down scenario or otherwise..

I haven't started the project but I explain my thoughts here and why i got it.
