Dedicated to the gallant comrades and unknown warriors of the Eighth Army, who fought at: El Alamein, El Agheila, Tripoli, Mureth Tunis, Sicily, Reggia, Sangro, Vollurno, Anzio, Cassino, Gothic line, Senio, Po River, and in Austria. Despite Lady Astor's infamous assertions that these men were dodging the D-Day landings in Normandy, they had in fact been fighting for years beginning in Africa then going on the offensive and fighting in all the above places. Having just uploaded 'Banks of Sicily', I was reminded of this song which used to be in my repertoire, but got lost along with a number of others when a former partner went off with a number of my folk books. I know it has been covered by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, but I learned this one from one of those books before I ever heard it sung, the tune Lili Marlene being well known. The song was particularly taken up by the Canadian forces who continued to fight in Italy at the time of the D-Day landings and after.
