Texas boy wins National Spelling Bee after spelling 'koinonia'

Karthik Nemmani (bottom right) didn't win his regional or county spelling bee. But he was still good enough to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Throwing everything he had into his one shot at glory, 14-year-old Karthik outlasted better-known spellers on Thursday night and became the champion after a dramatically abrupt end to the competition, when 12-year-old Naysa Modi misspelled the word 'Bewusstseinslage'. His winning word was 'koinonia,' which means Christian fellowship or communion. The tension and relief on the faces of the other competitors, including Nicholas Lee, 14. (top left) who punches the air after spelling a word correctly. Paul Hamrick, also 14, from  closes his eyes tight shut (top center) as he spells his word correctly while 12-year-old Isaac Phillips (top right) scratches his head in disbelief after he got his word wrong. Nilla Rajan (bottom center) celebrates as another competitor gets her words right and Brody Dicks (bottom left) racks his brains to correctly spell 'caudation' correctly.
