There aren't many places to go rafting that are underground, but John Bartell found one. He joined the Sierra Whitewater Rafting crew and brought back some amazing video for an upcoming Bartell's Backroads story. In the 1860s, California gold miners diverted the American River by creating a tunnel with black powder and pickaxes. They did it to expose a part of the riverbed and make it easier to mine, and in the process, they created what's now semi-ironically referred to as "one of the seven wonders of Placer County."
