[INTRO] The comic "dragon ball" enjoys an immense popularity around the world. The story is about seven magical balls that make wishes come true. You know what? In the real world, there are also some stones spheres that are equally mysterious as the “dragon balls".

In central american country Costa Rica, stone balls of hundreds of years old were found.The size of them varies from a few centimeters to over two and half meters. And some of they can weigh as much as 24 tons. 

The legends and myths surround the stones never stopped. Some think that they were gifts from extra-terrestrial. Others relate their roundness to mythical Atlantis, saying that they are the containers of esoteric energy. Still others believe they are made as such by nature. Some local legends even state that the native inhabitants had access to a potion able to soften the rock. 

Apparently, the above-mentioned speculations are not based on scientific foundation. Fortunately, thanks to to work of scientists and archeologists, the truth of stones have been unveiled.

Archaeological research has encountered scientific evidence of the sites where their creators lived, identifying tools used in their making, and locating spheres in their original place, which allow us to know their possible uses.  

Stone spheres are artifacts manufactured by the pre Columbian indigenous people from southern Costa Rica. It have been proposed that they were symbols of social standing, power and ethnic identity.

Many of them have been found in linear, semicircular and triangular alignments. In the main villages, particularly those placed at Diquis Delta, the spheres were located in open areas or plazas, or associated to principal residences. Isolated spheres have been interpreted as territorial or special place markers.

It is also proposed that they could have functioned as mnemonic artifacts because of their possible association with celestial phenomena such as solstices, equinoxes and constellation linked to the agricultural cycle or their beliefs, something not yet verified because of their alteration or removal.

Sphere creation started towards 300AD, and had its peak between 800-1500AD with the development of chiefdom societies, There are spheres measuring a few sentiments all the way up to some 25 meters in diameter, with weights that could reach 24 tons. Their production implicated having to move great blocks of stone, possibly by means of levers and bearing basses.

Granodiorite, andesite, limestone and sandstone rocks were scabbled with stone tools and at the same time heat ware applied in order to shape them. It is possible that the indigenous controlled the roundness with wooden elements. For the final finish they used abrasives such as sand, and some were polished in order to give them sheen or luster.

The Diquis Pre-Columbian chiefdom settlements with spheres, were inscribed on the list of UNESCO’s World Patrimony at the World Patrimony Committee meeting held in Doha, Qatar in June 2014.
