Captain Sleep And BigFoot is a story that explains the importance of sleep. Watch and listen to find out why it is important to have a good sleep.

Find it hard to get your baby to sleep?

Is your child sleeping enough?
For child 4 to 6 years old, they should be getting at least 10 hours of sleep. For 7 to 13-year-old children, they should be getting at least 9 hours of sleep.

So what are the benefits of adequate sleep?
1) Boosts learning - Sufficient sleep is associated with better learning and aids in memory consolidation. Getting enough sleep is important for your child's cognitive development.
2)Promotes growth - Growth hormones are primarily secreted during sleep. Adequate sleep ensures that your child produces a normal amount of growth hormones.
3) Improves health - Insufficient sleep is associated with higher Body Mass Index (BMI) as it affects the production of hormones which influence weight. Sleeping enough is also vital for having a good immune system.
4) Influences mood - Child who does not get enough sleep may experience more mood swings and irritability, causing them to be more prone to frustration, crying and losing their tempers.

Sleep Tips:
1) Establish an enjoyable routine - Establish a regular routine before bedtime such as listening to soothing music or reading a book to help your child relax and anticipate bedtime. Remember to allocate enough time for the routine so that your child can go to sleep on time.
2) Create a comfortable environment - Keeping the bedroom quiet, cool and dark can help your child feel comfortable. The room should not be too hot or cold. Some children may like the dim nightlight, which is fine.
3) Power your child down to sleep - Avoid things that may stimulate your child near bedtime, as they may disrupt the sleep cycle. These include vigorous activities, bright screens and caffeinated drinks.
4) Consistency is key - Even if it is the holidays or weekends, maintain your child's sleep routine to keep his or her sleep pattern consistent.
5)Assurance - Provide your child with a personal object such as a soft toy or blanket. It can give your child a sense of security and comfort when you are not in the room.
6) No naps near bedtime - Avoid naps close to bedtime as it may prevent your child from falling asleep through the night.

Steps to prepare your child for bedtime:
1) Bathtime
2) Brush Teeth
3) Pick pyjamas
4) Dim lights and keep room cool
5) Get comfortable
6) Do a wind-down activity
7) Say Goodnight
Note: Some children may see bedtime preparation as boring and resist the habit. Listening and communicating with your child patiently will help ease them into this habit to get at least 10 hours of sleep.

Wind-down Activities:
1)Create "Wind-down Jars" filled with activities that will help relax your child.
Write some activity ideas down on some wooden sticks that you and your child can do before bedtime. Some of these activities can be things like reading a storybook, keeping a journal, colouring or even listening to music.
2) 'Five things' Sensory game
The 'five things' game is a simple game to help wind down your child. Ask your child to think back on the day and name five things that he or she has seen, heard, smelt, tasted and felt. Give your instructions in a monotonous tone and before you know it, your child will get drowsy and fall into deep sleep.
3) Breathing Techniques
Breathing exercises can be a soothing way to ease your child to sleep. Follow the steps below to demonstrate to your child how to do it.
Instructions:
Step 1: Keep your body relaxed.
Step 2: Close your eyes.
Step 3: Focus on your lower abdomen (belly) and imagine a small balloon in that space. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the nostrils, imagining the balloon inflating (getting bigger) slowly, then hold your breath for a few seconds.
Step 4: Finally, slowly exhale through the mouth, imagining the balloon gently deflating (getting smaller); blow out of the mouth as if blowing out a candle.
Tip: Place a hand over the lower abdomen to feel it go up and down, and make sure you're not breathing with the chest. Repeat this at least 10 times.
4) Guided Imagery Exercise
This is a simple relaxation technique to help your child reduce stress and tension in his or her body. This activity allows children to exercise their creativity as you paint them a scenario with your words. Their imagination will take them to their own special place as they forget their worries and anxiety and slowly ease themselves into a relaxed state, making it easier to fall asleep.
You can find many guided visual imagery scenarios online such as forests, starry skies or summer clouds, which you can read to your child. Perhaps the biggest challenge here would be trying not to fall asleep before your child!
