For a lot of us getting into aquaponics means learning a lot of new terms for things. One of those terms is head height. Basically head height is how far up and along the pump must push the water before it is released somewhere. Many of us think that logically we would measure from the top of the top but that is not quite true. To find head height you start by measuring from the top of the water being pumped to the highest point in its travels. Add an extra foot to the head height for every ten feet of pipe or hose being used and you are good to go. Not that bad really. When picking a pump for your aquaponic garden make sure you have that head height number in mind and you'll be fine. It's a good idea to buy a pump that will move all of your systems water AT LEAST once every two hours, although I recommend once per hour and I run at about twice per hour ..., at the head height you calculated. It is worth every penny to pick out a pump that has been designed for pond and garden use because they are generally more energy efficient and designed to run 24/7.
