NLO -- Observing the nonlinear optical effect of changes in the refractive index of a material with the variation of incident light intensity. The technique is called a z-scan, the material used for the demonstration was carbon disulphide, and the wavelength used was 532nm. The sample was moved through a distance of 1 cm during the video, through the focal of a lens of focal length 20 cm. The observable region (along the scan axis) for nonlinear optical effects is so small that just a few years ago I would perhaps have dismissed the effect as an artifact of my measuring apparatus, or something that was tricking my eyes, or perhaps something else that was explainable by high school physics that I might have overlooked. I'm feeling a little guilty, now -- scientific dishonesty, much?
