In celebration of Earth Day, U.S. Embassy Manila hosted a discussion on Ocean Pollution: Effects on Marine Biodiversity on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.

A panel of experts, including marine scientists and conservation activists will discuss biodiversity of Philippine waters, how pollution threatens the marine ecosystem and how the youth can get involved.

1. Dr. Terrence “Terry” Gosliner – Dean of Science and Research Collections, California Academy of Sciences. He guides the Academy’s efforts in research to discover new knowledge about life's diversity Dr. Gosliner is a leading researcher in the evolutionary history of nudibranchs (the colorful group also known as sea slugs), and has published more than 150 scientific papers and five books, many focusing on the Coral Triangle of the western Pacific.

2. Dr. Rich Mooi – Curator of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology at the California Academy, Rich focuses his research on echinoderms, a group which includes the sea urchins, sea stars, brittlestars, sea cucumbers, sea lilies, and sand dollars.

3. Dr. Meg Burke – Director of Teacher and Youth Education at the California Academy of Sciences. Since 2004 she has been deeply involved in educational outreach in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Philippines, focused on Philippine coral reefs and their conservation.

4. Dr. Ma. Carmen Ablan-Lagman is the Head Developer of the Philippine Genetic Diversity Network Database. She is currently an Associate Professor at the De La Salle University.

5.  Susan Bautista-Afan - Chief Marketing Officer for ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, supporting 6 programs focusing on Education, Livelihood, Child Protection and the Environment.
