A film made about our recent young people's masterclass: Download Security! A Camden Vocational Masterclass The key objective is to protect the Collection, what do you think the Collection is? Paintings, Art. The Collection actually is everyone who actually comes here and it does include the works of art. We don't want you to walk into a museum and everything to be behind glass. The Trustees want you to walk into the museum and it to be like a house. So some of the security elements are overt, CCTV are visible as you walk through the front entrance and as you go into the galleries there are CCTV, there are alarms. There are a lot of alarms which are hidden behind the scenes, that's all reported back to, electronically, to the 24 hour control room which is monitored. While we are walking around, what I want you to keep your eyes open for, I'm not going to say much, things which you think make the Collection safe. Then obviously we have the radios to communicate to staff on the ground, saying can you check this. So there's a lot behind the scenes. When you left home today, did you lock your door? Why did you lock your door? Safety Yes, so you actually carried out risk assessment. It's all about lowering the risk, a lot of the situations can be damage, accidental such as wheel chairs, or someone touching something that they shouldn't. We hold events, large numbers of people, and obviously fire evacuation procedures, emergency produces are very crucial and training for our staff, making sure if there is an incident, if there is an emergency they deal with it correctly. A priceless 18th-century picture, that can very easily happen and there is £1,000,000 on the floor. We've been around the museum, looking at the pictures, seeing how the security works. Well I came here with my college, Westminster Kingsway, we just came to learn about the security and how they look after the artwork and the people who come to museum. At events like this you get to learn a lot of stuff, before today when I came, I was really interested in air-traffic controlling, that was my main goal. But now I have actually come to learn about security, that could be my second goal. I think they got an insight to the museum, where they didn't have any idea what goes on behind the scenes. I wasn't interested in security before, but since today I found it quite interesting actually. I'll look into security a bit more and hopefully it might be a career for me. If I had that opportunity when I was at school, I might have been interested in museums earlier. There are a number of courses people can do in security, it's an NVQ qualification, SI licencing is there for the private sector, so there is a lot of things you can do to prepare yourself before you go for an interview in an organisation. Today was out of my comfort zone but it was really really fun, it was really good, I learnt a lot of stuff. I live and breathe museums and it's the trust, that I'm trusted to protect this national collection and that gives me a great satisfaction, that we are protecting it for the next generation. It opened in the 19th-century, it's going to be there for the next 100 years, the next generation.
