Tour Scotland video of Flight Sergeant, Robert Ambler, gravestone in Sleepyhillock Cemetery on ancestry visit to Montrose. Robert served with the Royal Australian Air Force and died aged 24 on the 4th of June, 1943. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Ellen Ambler, of Arncliffe, New South Wales, Australia. The surname Ambler was carried to England in the enormous movement of people that followed the Norman Conquest of 1066. Ambler is a name for a person employed as an enameller, and derives from the Anglo-Norman-French amayler, of the same meaning. It is also possible that the name refers to one who is employed in a profession which involves horses, as the Old English ambler means walker, and is a technical word for the slowest gait of a horse.
