Why Affirmations For Self-Esteem & Self-Confidence Don't Work https://youtu.be/UsQTM9hLPSM Affirmations have never worked for me and it wasn't until I started doing NLP training that I discovered why. NLP uses the term reference experience to point at the experience or experiences that you often unconsciously refer to that dictates your state. It can also be used to generalize information. Affirmations without reference experiences are just words. There's no substance. There's a movement in this country to build up the self-esteem of children. Though well-intended, attempting to go at self-esteem directly doesn't work. True self-esteem and confidence originates with reference experiences. I don't feel confident about climbing a mountain because I've never done it. If I told myself over and over that I'm a great mountain climber and I could make myself believe it, I could get myself into trouble. There was a study done that tested mathematic ability in students from different countries. I don't remember what the U.S. ranked but it was embarrassingly low. However, U.S. students ranked the highest when it came to confidence in their math skills. This sense of false confidence and false self-esteem obviously is not serving these students and it doesn't matter how much they believe their math skills are great, it doesn't make it so and the confidence and self-esteem they have about it is useless and sets them up for failure. If you want to be confident at something focus on reference experiences you already have of demonstrating what you want to be confident at. You can also take reference experiences of times when you didn't do it well and imagine what it would be like in the future once you've corrected your mistakes. While this sounds really simple it's at least ten times more effective than affirmations. It takes a little more work but is well worth it. Also, get out there and get more reference experiences. In most cases this is called practice. The more you practice something the better you get at it and that will give you confidence, far more than just telling yourself you're great at it.
