Creating a 'Musical Collage'?

In creating many of the tracks on my ancient-themed albums for lyre, I discovered that music can be treated like a Cubist Collage - by literally 'cutting' a melody from it's original, traditional context and re-arranging it with unusual instrumentation & timbre can completely change the 'meaning' of the original melody - just as a Cubist collage does with images! This is what I did with most of the tracks on my 2008 album, "King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel" - apart from "The Music of Moses" (the prelude to the album - an improvisation for biblical lyre on an ancient Egyptian scale), all of the other tracks were selected from the traditional Jewish klezmer and sacred repertoire... 'Cutting' these melodies from their original, traditional musical context, I arranged them for my modern evocation of the 10-string Biblical lyre; the 'Kinnor' of my very own, very ancient Levite ancestors...and as if by magic, the musical meaning of these traditional melodies metamorphosed into a 'magic carpet ride' back to ancient Biblical times: http://ancientlyre.com/ancient_biblical_themed_albums/king_davids_lyre_echoes_of_ancient_israel/ To bring the experiment in 'musical collage creation' full circle, in this presentation, I take track 9 from this album; a traditional Klezmer melody, "Kandel's Hora" - and re-arrange it back to the klezmer fiddle - but adding a host of contemporary effects, thus transforming the musical meaning of original melody, this time into a 'musical spaceship ride' into an evocation of the distant future...enjoy!
