A "thermite reaction" can consist of various recipies, and involves a metal being oxidezed by another oxide compound. This results in the production of a tremendous amount of heat. In this case, aluminum powder is mixed with iron (III) oxide (essentially, powdered rust), and produces aluminum oxide, and molten iron, which is iron in the LIQUID state. We also decided to test just how indestructible Tony Stark's Ironman suit really is! The enthalpy change for this reaction is around -850 kJ/mol of iron (III) oxide, and using the 100g mixture in this demonstration, you are witnessing the release of roughly 398 kJ of energy (not counting the burning of the Ironman action figure...Sorry Mr. Stark). That equates to about 95 food Calories, or, one large bite of a Burger King Whopper (670 Cal total).
