Groups Prepare To Take In Track Greyhounds

The Kansas Lottery is continuing talks with the Woodlands on a deal for slot machines at the dog and horse track.

Last week, the Woodlands announced that it will shut down on Aug. 24.

But the track's general manager said it still hopes to reach an agreement for up to 800 slot machines that would allow it to reopen.

If the track stays closed, hundreds of greyhounds may be looking for a home.

KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that a local animal rescue group is already preparing to take in the dogs.

The group REGAP, which stands for retired greyhounds as pets, have been placing the dogs in new homes for years, but never in the number it is expecting next month.

"It's overwhelming to think we're going to have as many dog as we think we'll have to try and find homes for," said Cher Oliver with REGAP.

By most estimates, there may be up to 300 greyhounds who will need a home. Some of those greyhounds have spent up to three years chasing a mechanical rabbit.

REGAP has placed more than 4,000 dogs in the metro area in the last 16 years.
