When this wall was built about 1800 years ago, London was under the Roman rule and the city was called Londinium. This defensive wall was built in the late 2nd or early 3rd century and probably between years 200 and 220 AD. The wall remained in active use as a fortification for over 1,000 years afterwards long after the Roman departure in 410. It was used to defend London against raiding Saxons in 457, and was redeveloped in the medieval period.
During the Great Fire of London in September 1666, almost all of the medieval City of London inside the wall was destroyed. After the tragedy, buildings and warehouses were built on both sides of the Wall and the portion seen in this video was forgotten. About 300 years later, in the 1940s, during the Second World War, German bombs demolished the surrounding buildings and the wall was rediscovered. It has been preserved since then.
