After three decades as a professional dancer and performer, Poornima Ashok reflects on the lessons she learnt from her Muse: Radha, a mythological character that embodies the concept of unconditional love. She demonstrates her interpretation of Radha’s undying love through her dance and gives Radha’s story the voice that she had inadvertently lost to the annals of history. She elaborates on the pressing need for modern relationships to emulate Radha’s form of unconditional love as a way to fruitful kinships. In extension, she stresses on the importance of unequivocal love in contexts outside of human relationships as well. This talk functions as a way to integrate an age old Indian dance form, Bharathanatyam with lessons learnt from a long and prolific career as Karnataka’s Natya Rathna Bharatanatyam is Poornima's lifetime pursuit. After initial training from Smt. Radha Sridhar of Bangalore, she did advanced training under the famous Guru Padmabhushan Sri. Dhananjayans of Chennai. She also learnt the intricate aspects of abhinaya from Smt.Kalanidhi Narayan. She was a recipient of central government scholarship for advanced training in Bharatanatyam. Devoted to art, coupled with creativity and intelligent innovativeness Poornima founded 'Nrityanjali' in 1989. Since then she has passionately promoted the art to many young talented dancers, most of them having achieved proficiency and has organized dance festivals, seminars and workshops with eminent gurus in Bangalore annually. She was conferred the prestigious 'Karnataka Kalashri' by Karnataka Sangeeta Nritya Academy, Govt of Karnataka in 2016. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
