Translating Coptic, Greek or Hebrew works is an arduous process that often takes decades. It is as much a labor of literary creativity and keeping in mind the sensibilities of modern readers as it is a mechanical task of finding exact wording. We look at the challenges, subtleties and often impossible choices that translators face in bringing the wisdom of ancient faiths from tattered scrolls to inspirational collections that have transformed our view of Gnosticism, nascent Christianity, Paganism and Classic Judaism. Lastly, we take a biographical excursion of one of the preeminent translators of Gnostic works of our times. It includes his views of the pre-Christian Jewish mystics and their notions of Sophia, to the Cathar heresies that were truly sublime poetry for the ages, as well as other mystic and literary texts he breathed life into during an illustrious career.
Astral Guest-- Willis Barnstone, translator and contributor of The Restored New Testament: A New Translation with Commentary, Including the Gnostic Gospels Thomas, Mary, and Judas , Essential Gnostic Scriptures, The Other Bible , and The Gnostic Bible: Revised and Expanded Edition .
