Линейный корабль "Императрица Мария" 1911-1916 The Battleship "Empress Maria" 1911 - 1916 Music: Guards Counter March of the Imperial Navy On June 11, 1911 the battleship “Empress Maria” was laid down at the shipyard of "Roussud" in Nikolaev, along with the same type of battleships”, Emperor Alexander III " and " Empress Catherine the Great ." The builder was L. L. Koromaldi . The name given to the ship was dedicated to the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna , the wife of the late Emperor Alexander III . The ship was launched on October 6, 1913 and by May 23,1915 was completed. She arrived in Sevastopol on the afternoon of June 30, 1915. From October 13 to 15, 1915, the battleship covered the activities of the 2nd brigade of battleships in Zonguldak Region of the Turkish Black Sea coast. From 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 November 1915 she covered the actions of the 2nd brigade of battleships during the shelling of Varna (present day Bulgaria) and Evsinograd. From February 5 to April 18, 1916 she participated in the Trebizond campaign and the successful capture of the Turkish city of Trabzon. In the summer of 1916, Admiral Kolchak made the "Empress Maria" a flagship and sailed out to sea. On October 20, 1916 on the ship there was an explosion in a powder cellar, the ship sank with 225 seamen loosing their lives and 85 seriously wounded. Admiral Kolchak personally led the operation to save the sailors on the battleship. The Commission investigating the events failed to find out the cause of the explosion. Work on the lifting of the ship began later in the same year. According to the project, pressurized air was supplied to the compartments of the ship, pre-sealed, displacing the water, and the ship had to float upwards with the keel. Then it was planned to take the ship to dock and fully seal the hull, and on deep water put it on an even keel. During the storm in November 1917, the ship sank by the aft part . However they managed to completely raise the battleship by May 1918. All this time divers worked in the compartments, unloading the ammunition. The ship’s 130 mm artillery having already been salvaged. Under conditions of civil war and revolution, the ship was never restored. In 1927 she was dismantled for scrap metal…….
