CANTON, N.C. -- The Evergreen paper mill in Canton says it is closing its doctors office and pharmacy March 31. It says the number of patients has gone down over the years and is no longer feasible to continue the operations. The company notified employees by letter, taking most by surprise. They were provided a list of doctors that accept Evergreen's insurance, as well as participating pharmacies, but many say they don't like the change. From what I understand you're going to have an opportunity to see other doctors within I think it is 10 or 12 mile radius...something like that, Evergreen employee Michael Bryson said. He says, Seems like here in the last several years they've taken everything away. And they're taking that too. I don't think it's right. A spokesman says the company recognizes the hardship and explored all options before making a hard decision. Ive worked there for 31 years and it's not the same place it used to be, Kevin Allen said. Union president Brandon Ferguson says no additional costs are expected. Evergreen has not said how much money it will save by closing the clinic and pharmacy. A representative told News 13 those numbers are not finalized yet.
