What made halberds and other polearms so good? Polearms such as halberds became the primary battlefield weapon during the later medieval period and early Renaissance, a typical polearm similar to a halberd would have had a primary spear point, a cutting edge similar to an axe or a sickle and a reverse beak used for hooking enemy cavalry or crushing through armour. Halberds like other polearms were very cheap and fast to mass-produce, and training for them would be relatively simple. This allowed large numbers of soldiers to be fielded in effective formations that were difficult to attack.
