On a brisk, cloudy Saturday I drove to Sams Gap off I-26 to hike the Appalachian Trail north to Big Bald, one of the nicest balds on the AT in the Southeast. I knew it was going to be cloudy early in the day, but expected it to burn off from weather forecasts. It most certainly did not. The majority of my 13 mile hike was in the clouds, and I was treated to an abundance of hard rime ice on the plant life that I rarely get to see. The top of Big Bald was barren, windy, and icy. With 20+ mph winds and mid 20s temperatures the wind chill was probably around 10F or less. I couldn't hang around the summit for more than a few minutes without my extremities going numb, especially during picture-taking. Unfortunately I didn't get any views except towards the end from West Street Gap Peak, but it was still a magical day in a winter wonderland. You can easily Google Big Bald to see what it looks like in sunlight.
