Cardiff Bay occupies the former docklands that once handled enormous quantities of coal exported from the South Wales valleys during the industrial era. After the decline of traditional dock activity, large-scale regeneration transformed the waterfront through new housing, cultural institutions, public spaces and the construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage, which created a large freshwater area from the former tidal estuary. The result is one of Britain’s most dramatic examples of dockland redevelopment, combining surviving maritime heritage with some of the Welsh capital’s most important contemporary architecture.
